The Mill was built in 1682 and has been in continuous operation since then, grinding corn, wheat, and other grains with it's massive grindstones. The Mill is powered by an overshot water wheel that utilizes water from the Wye East River, and is the oldest water powered grist Mill in the US.

Grist mills were an important part of everyday life in South Carolina during 18th and 19th centuries. Corn and wheat were ground by hand before the invention of grist mills. Grist mills were named for grist meaning grain and a mill being something which grinds. They look like complicated machines, but they really work on simple principles.

These pages describe and document the restoration of my 12 Williams Stone Burr Grist Mill. I bought the mill in January of 2000 and began restoration soon after. It took me close to a year, working off and on, to complete the mill. It sat in my shop for over a year after I had completed it.

Aug 11, 2015E ven though the San Jos mill was small and simple, when operating at full capacity, it could grind one bushel, or 60 pounds, of grain every hour. This was enough flour for 1,000 loaves of bread in one day. Why the mill ceased operation within 10-12 years is a mystery.

Other than the wooden enclosure being completely rotted away, the only major problem with the mill was that the runner stone was loose on the shaft. The stone is secured to the shaft with babbitt. I contacted a friend who had poured some babbitt bearings for me once before and asked if he thought he could reattach the stone.
